Significance of Retirement Home Background Checks

Retirement homes are supposed to be a home sweet home for the elderly people. However, some news about care provider’s negligence on the job or the increase in the rate of crimes against retirement home residents has caused many people to grow alarmed especially those who have relatives dwelling in these kinds of homes.

It is very fortunate that background checks on employees or applicants seeking employment in a nursing home has been made compulsory. The employer, with the help of a trusty and reliable background checking company conducts a series of employment searches including criminal background check to ensure that all the applicants are fit and appropriate to work as care providers for the elderly.

This is because the law states that no employer who runs a nursing home can hire any employee without first acquiring a complete record of his criminal history. Background checks may be done on any person seeking employment on a retirement home or on a present employee seeking a promotion.

There are many reasons why background checks on these homes are important including:

1. To ensure the safety of the retirement home residents

The elderly can be an easy prey for criminals and felons who want to take advantage of their frailty and old age. Because the elderly can be vulnerable victims to any type of crime as they can hardly do anything to protect or defend themselves, it is necessary that retirement homes ensure that only trustworthy caregivers are hired to care for them.

This can be done through an intensive background check that will provide valuable information about a person’s history such as criminal records, medical records, educational background, employment history, driving records, vehicle registration, former addresses, military records, character references, incarceration records, drug test records and many others.

Aside from ensuring the no criminal is hired as a caregiver in a nursing home, a background check through the medical records it supplies, also guarantees that the caregiver is in the pink of health both physically and mentally.

Moreover, since we all know that care providers should have license and proper training on care giving, a background check will also give the employer information regarding this area. Background checks also include drug test records, which is also very important because having a drug user inside a retirement home can indeed put the resident’s lives at risk.

2. To give peace of mind to the family of the elderly

Background checks on the nursing home employees can surely give peace of mind to the family and relatives of the retirement home resident, knowing that their loved one is in safe hands. It is expected that it is less likely for families to entrust their elderly loved ones into retirement homes that do not implement an employee background check policy.

3. To avoid negligent hiring lawsuits

Background checks can also help you avoid encountering negligent hiring lawsuits, which can be the unfortunate consequences of hiring bad people to work as caregivers for your company and for skipping the process of proper background checking.

4. To protect the name and reputation of the nursing home

If something bad happens to one of the nursing home residents because of one of your employees, not only will you be sued of negligent hiring, but the retirement home’s name and reputation will also be damaged.

5. To minimize incidents of resume falsifications

There are many pretentious applicants out there who fill their application with various resume lie just to get accepted. Some applicants lie about their educational backgrounds, claiming they have graduated from a top care giving educational institute, with fake certificates to further prove their claims.

Some applicants declare that they have this number of years work experience in a similar job. You will be dismayed to find out that the seemingly good applicant with excellent resume credentials turns out to be a phony. A background check will help you distinguish those who are indeed potentially good employees from those who are just faking it.

Caring for the elderly is a delicate job. It entails utmost responsibility, proficient skills, and sincere concern for the one you are taking care for. Nursing homes or retirement homes serve as an elderly person’s new home come retirement age.
